Visitors to RAF Cosford experience VR Spitfire flight in new zone by Kyoti Graphics

The RAF Museum at Cosford offers visitors a fascinating day out by sharing the insight and stories of the RAF and its servicemen and women. Visitors can now enjoy a new virtual reality experience in the cockpit of a Spitfire – one of the most iconic aeroplanes in history. This new Virtual Reality (VR) Zone was designed and installed by Kyoti Graphics in partnership with the Museum team.

Kyoti Graphic is based in Telford, Shropshire and supplies large format graphics for bespoke projects from business signage, exhibition graphics and displays including showrooms and visitor attractions, throughout the region.

Creating a standalone room within one of the Museum’s large aircraft hangars was an interesting and challenging project for the Kyoti Graphics team. The brief demanded creativity and ingenuity to deliver the VR Zone within a modest, fixed budget. The Zone needed to create an appropriate environment for this unique visitor experience – minimise ambient noise from the surrounding hangar and deliver an exciting atmosphere whilst maintaining the intimacy of the cockpit space.

After proposing various options with the Museum, Kyoti Graphics ultimately installed the VR Zone comprising a timber frame to create nearly 20sqm floorspace, with a floor which is sealed with membrane and finished with commercial grade laminate flooring. The walls are clad with board to secure the sound insulation. The exciting visual effect is completed with dramatic images of the RAF pilots in flight and illuminated cockpit each printed onto large stretched fabric graphics and attached to all walls and ceiling. Inside the VR Zone, the booths have been created with walls and lightboxes so visitors can enjoy the VR Spitfire flight independently from one another.

Steve Powell, Retail Operations Manager at RAF Cosford explained, “we are extremely proud of our new VR Zone and have enjoyed collaborating with Kyoti Graphics to create this unique visitor experience.”

Rob Evans of Kyoti Graphics thoroughly enjoyed this design and build stating, “we love being involved with projects of this scale. Working with clients from the conception of the original idea to delivering the completed project is very rewarding.”
